Esprit’s Retro Collection Tugs at Nostalgia’s Heartstrings
Full disclosure: I am a child the ‘80s. This greatly influenced my personal style and even today, the decade still endures in what I love, like bright colors, big earrings, bold stripes and nothing too tight on the body.
So the other day, I was meeting a friend at a local mall for a coffee, and I strolled by an Esprit store. The front window display caught my eye immediately. It was set up like someone had raided a closet straight from the era of AquaNet, gummy bracelets and Punky Brewster. My jaw dropped, and I felt compelled to buy every piece of clothing from Esprit’s new Retro Collection. Sadly, it doesn’t appear to be available online in the United States, but the UK website has the current lookbook. Let’s not forget that Opening Ceremony did a noteworthy collaboration with Esprit last fall that interpreted its legacy well. But this current Retro Collection directly from Esprit’s heritage seems fresher, bouncier, and speaks more to my nostalgic heart—it could also be that this collection is geared for summer.
The logo is printed on almost every top and bag, and each look harks back to that light-hearted, laid-back West Coast spirit. And if I can admit this openly, I was so into the brand as a tween that I often tried to draw the logo on my Pee-Chee folders with the “E” having no spine but rather three horizontal lines.
So what’s next? Will Benetton revive the rugby shirt? Or will Contempo Casuals make a comeback? One can—like totally—hope. -sc
